Yurii Kahanov

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Vice-Rector for Scientific and Academic Affairs, Zaporizhzhia National University
He was born on June 10, 1982, in Zaporizhzhia. In 1999, he graduated with honours from the general education school No. 1 named after T. G. Shevchenko in Zaporizhzhia. In 1999, he entered the Faculty of History of Zaporizhzhia State University. He graduated in 2004 with an honours master’s degree in history.
In 2004-2005, he was a guidance counsellor of the Scientific and Methodological Centre of the Department of Education and Science of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, deputy editor-in-chief of the publishing house “Premier”.
In 2004-2007, he studied as a postgraduate in Zaporizhzhia National University. Since 2005, he works as an assistant, lecturer, since 2009 – senior lecturer, since 2010 – Assistant Professor at the Department of Modern History of Ukraine, Zaporizhzhia National University.
From September 2014 to February 2018 – Head of the Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies of the Zaporizhzhia National University.
From February 2018 – Vice-Rector in Charge of Scientific and Pedagogical Work, Zaporizhzhia National University.
In 2009 he defended his thesis for obtaining a scientific degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences in the specialty 07.00.01 – History of Ukraine on the theme: “Opposition Movement in Ukraine and the Countries of Central-Eastern Europe (1980s – 1991): A Comparative Analysis”.
In 2011, he was promoted to an associate professor. In 2021, he was promoted to an professor.
In 2019, he defended his thesis for obtaining a scientific degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences in the specialty 07.00.01 – History of Ukraine on the theme: «Homo Sovieticus Identity Construction (1953–1991): Case of Ukraine»
Sphere of scientific interests: Soviet ideology, “homo sovieticus”, construction of Soviet identity, problems of historical-comparative studies.
