The article provides analysis of various survival practices which the representatives of Ukrainian intelligentsia who under different circumstances found themselves in the occupation area had to resort to.The authors substantiate that the extreme conditions of the German occupation regime demanded that the Ukrainian elite formed new behavioral models that would have ensured basic physical, material, and psychological survival. During the years of occupation most of the Ukrainian elite experienced radical change of social status given the loss of social links, position in a society and conventional sources of income. The former officials, representatives of scientific and artistic professions for the most part could not adjust to the new living conditions, were losing their moral and ethical as well as political directions. The occupation authorities’ attitude to the Ukrainian elite throughout the whole occupation period was controversial: it ranged from engaging them to active collaboration in local authorities and, correspondingly, getting scientific and cultural life on the seized territories back in order, up to persecution and repressions. For many representatives of intellectual professions carrying out their civic and professional duty helped realize the practices of combating military threats and align the short-term prospects. However, people’s main task during wartime was to physically survive, which during the change in power was mostly provided by political mimicry and conformity and which the representatives of intellectual elite frequently turned to. The vast majority of elite representatives counted on further pursuing their professional activities in any situation, irrespective of the choice of main behavioral strategies which consequently contributed to the preservation of Ukrainian science, education, a part of material and spiritual values.
