Special attention was paid to diplomatic preparation for the proclamation of independence of the Crimean Khanate in 1772 and the response to this action of the Ottoman Empire and the leading European countries. The connection of foreign policy (military and diplomatic) Russia‟s actions in the southern direction with the events in Poland are observed. The discrepancies among the top leadership of the Russian Empire concerning foreign policy strategy for the Ottoman Empire and Crimean Khanate are shown. The existence of the formally independent Crimean Khanate while maintaining its international legal personality during 1772-1783 in general can be considered as a tactical and a temporary stage of the overall process of Russian‟s mastering on the Northern Black Sea areas. Although the proclamation of independence of the Crimea in 1772 was well prepared, the Russian Empire had to make lot of efforts concerning its international recognition. ER -
