After incorporation about the southern Ukrainian region as a part of Russian Empire in the second half of the XVIII century, there was a growing civilizational interest of world community’s minds. It led to the emer gence of a new type of tourism – «traveling» – wandering trips to countries whose culture was significantly different from West European models. As a result, visitors left a significant number of travel notes after their trips, which were published and gave rise to a new genre of literature with the term «trav elers». Exactly on the pages of travel notes that both Russian and foreign vis itors analyzed personal views on the status of the southern Ukrainian region, its contribution to the development of western Europe in the late XVIII – first half of the XIX century. Travelers became a valuable source of civilizational understanding of the processes that took place during the researched period. The scientific novelty of the study is that the authors tried to attract atten tion to the civilizational aspect of Traveler’s views and analyzed the debatable polar views of Russian and foreign travelers about the role of Russia and West Europe in shaping a new socio-cultural reality in south of Ukraine. The con clusions of the article focus on the differences in the perception of the new socio-cultural reality, which was formed in the southern region among for eigners on the one hand, and Russian visitors on the another one.
