This meant that basic developments in the field of theory and methodology, as well as leading experts on these issues were outside the Ukrainian SSR. In addition, many topics were closed for research. In general, Soviet Ukrainian archeography was subjected to consistent Russification. So any highly professional contribution to the development of Ukrainian archeography’s theory and methodology is of great importance. Moreover, the history of Ukrainian archeography occupies a special position among trends of the archeographical activities, since it is not only a separate topic of the research, but also serves as a research method, and in some definitions of archeography it is an integral part of its subject.

Mykola Kovalskyi is one of the most outstanding scholars for the Ukrainian historical science. The main achievements of the researcher in the field of historical source studies were highly appreciated by Ukrainian historians not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

The contribution of Mykola Kovalskyi to the formation of theoretical foundations and methods of the field archaeography and archival heuristics in the USSR in the 1970s is considered. In these fields, the project by M. Kovalskyi concerning the use of the source studies’ potential of historically composed complexes was innovative. On the example of the judicial and administrative institutions’ books, he tried to introduce new field, cameral and, eventually, edition rules for the presentation of a new for the Soviet source studies historical source.

The process of development of the theory and formation of the methodology of archeography in the “All-Union” archaeological centers, as well as new approaches developed by M. Kovalskyi concerning the books of judicial and administrative institutions as a new type of source that is valuable in its integrity is analyzed.

It is concluded that many principal directions in the theoretical and methodological thinking in the field of source studies in Ukraine had been laid down at that time and M. Kovalskyi’s sciettific heritage deserves further study, since it have not lost their relevance today.</p>}, number={50}, journal={Zaporizhzhia Historical Review}, author={Mavrin, O.}, year={2018}, month={Dec.}, pages={347-354} }
