@article{Chop_2019, title={Political parties and factions of the Makhno movement}, volume={1}, url={https://istznu.org/index.php/journal/article/view/166}, abstractNote={
The article disclaims conventional thesis regarding the Makhno movement being entirely anarcho-communist project. An author conducts an analysis of anarchist political organizations and factions that played leading roles in the higher echelon of the political system of the Makhno movement during 1917-1921.

The author brings into attention political predecessors of Makhnovshchina, the activity of anarchist peasant organizations “The Union of Poor Farmers” (Huliaipole, 1905-1917) and an anarcho-communist group from Novospasivka (1909-1911) that established a tradition of “Ukrainian anarchism” in the region. The article explores the ideology and political practice of later Makhno groups “The Huliaipole Anarchist Communist Group” (1917-1918) and “The Huliaipole Anarchists Union” (1919-1921). The conclusion is being made that the latest was a leading political and regulatory force of the movement. The author also notes to examine the contacts between the Makhno’s rebels and Ukrainian anarchist organizations, and their attempts to integrate into the Makhno movement. The relations with the Nabat Confederation of Anarchist Organizations, whose leaders organized cultural activities among the rebels, are examined separately.

The article explores the participation of representatives of other parties of socialist leanings in the insurgent movement, such as Left SRs, SRs Maximalists and Ukrainian Borotbists. It provides specific examples of the SRs’ cooperation with Makhno’s rebels and the presence of their representatives in the governing bodies of the Makhno movement – Huliaipole Region Military Revolutionary Council and Ukrainian Revolutionary Insurgents Council. Particular attention is given to the signing of the treaty of alliance between Ukrainian Communist Party (Borotbists) and The Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine.</p>}, number={52}, journal={Zaporizhzhia Historical Review}, author={Chop, V.
