Abstract

  1. Antonovych’s huge archeographic legacy and the lack of theoretical works on archeography force researchers to look for methods of reconstruction of the system of archeographic notions of the scholar. The article proposes some of measures for its reproduction. These include: clarifying the context of the use of the term “archeography”, attempts to identify the guidelines that V. Antonovych used in publishing activities; comparison of different scientific practices of the historian. With the help of these techniques, the scholar’s idea of the archeography’s subject, its tasks and methods of working with sources is clarified. Archeography for V. Antonoivych was not an independent but an auxiliary discipline, namely a Section of the Source Studies. Its purpose was to facilitate the work of historians, providing them with material not only in a convenient form, but also with convenient guidelines. The latter formed a system of archeographic scheme, focused on the needs of historiography. That is, the scholar considered each historical monument through the prism of the question: “What does it give for clearing up the facts of the history of Ukraine?”, What information does it carry?”. This was a completely pragmatic approach, dictated by the domination of positivism. Accordingly, it is the Source Studies of V. Antonovych that formed the archeographic plans (projects) of the historian. Therefore, an important aspect of the study at a certain stage was to clear up the system of Source Studies’ principles of the historian. The course “Source Studies” provides fruitful material for observation. By identifying a set of standard questions that V. Antonovych asks each source, it became clear that he had his own idea of the general scheme of the history of Ukraine. Although V. Antonovych did not leave a general study on this issue. According to this scheme, he evaluated and selected sources. The comparison of theoretical developments in the field of the theory of Source Studies and the archeographic achievements of the scholar, in particular concerning chronicles, became fruitful. The level of publication depended on the degree of value of the monument as a historical source. It is at the stage of assessments that V. Antonovych introduces elements of subjectivism, which in the end does not contradict the epoch. The latter, which is the 80s of the XIX century, combines both the positivist method, which is based on the search for objective data, and the idea of the subjective nature of the historian’s work with the sources of non-classical philosophy. As a result, an original style of archeographic publication is created, which is the subject of this research work. The article attempts to supplement the “classic” portrait of V. Antonovych as an archeographer created by domestic science, with non-classical features.
