The circumstances and interpretations Mithridates VI Eupator’s death: from ancient sources to “De Civitate Dei” St. Augustine

Abstract
This article is devoted to the analysis of circumstances Pontic king Mithridates VI Eupator‘s death and the later interpretations of those events. The article represents information upon narrative ancient sources, the treatise of St. Augustine ―De Civitate Dei‖ and a miniature from XV century. The evidences from the narrative sources are compared with a miniature of the later translating St. Augustine‘s treatise. Particular attention is paid to the contradictory interpretations and images the death of Mithridates VI in the ancient and following times. The methodological base includes approaches of comparison, analysis, synthesis and principles of historicism, sequence, complexity
