Industrial production and processing of silk on Cossack and Landlord Farms in the Chernihiv Governorate

Abstract

The paper studies the process of creation and development of silk farming on the territory of Chernihiv region in the 19th century. The reasons for rural people to look for alternatives to farming are explained. Peculiarities of regional silk production are found out. The role of particular sectors of society in the process of developing sericulture in the region is shown. Special attention is paid to peculiarities of silk production at the estates belonging to different owners. The author focuses on the fact that only a complete cycle of silk production provided an opportunity to compete in an agricultural sector of the Russian empire.
