THE IMAGE OF THE «MONSTER» IN THE IMAGINATION OF MEDIEVAL MAN: FEATURES OF THE PSYCHOLOGY PERCEPTION

Keywords: worldview, medieval man, consciousness, imagination psychology of perception, fear, image, neurosis, monstrosity, monster

Abstract

In the article, the authors demonstrate the analysis of the study concerning aspects of psychological perception regarding monstrous images based on the texts dated early and developed Medieval period. The research displays Medieval Epoque as a particular milestone concerning the formation of monstrosity when the conception of embodied enormity started to form and was a label for unrighteous people evoking identification with something diabolical and sinister

The article raises questions regarding the analysis of psychological processes of imagination, which appears to be a historical, collective and public phenomenon. Considering this fact, a vector of human history is inseparable from the functioning of the process. Consequently, the study of medieval imagery thinking attempts to conduct a more fundamental analysis of Medieval society and human nature. The authors emphasise that a medieval man, who strived for everything marvellous and magical (merveilleux et magique), created various monstrous images. Therefore, medieval texts do prove their perception and rendition.

As the authors reveal, medieval encyclopaedias, bestiaries and other sources display two controversial views regarding the image of beasts. One group of the sources demonstrates the understanding of beasts as God creatures even though. However, a man is known to have been created by God under his manner and semblance. At the same time, another group of resources shows the image of a monster as a threatening phenomenon of reality. Therefore, the texts dated to the period of the Early Medieval era elicited the attitude towards a monster and monstrosity as the work of God, which demonstrates the diversity of the world created by God.

A controversial rendition and perception of beasts are revealed by authors of developed Medieval (Honorius of Autun, Thomas of Cantimpré). The difference lies in the fact of an interrelation between a man and enigmatic creatures (beasts, monsters) where the letter is described as ones without a soul what makes them “unequal” to a man (compared to the explanation of Augustine of Hippo and Isidore of Seville).

In conclusion, a general representation of an image is defined as an “alien”. According to it, a psychological mechanism of perception identifies xenophobia phenomenon, which is a display of internal and irrational fears in front of threatening and unknown phenomena of reality.
