PUBLIC PARTICIPATION OF ELYSAVETGRAD IN HELP OF THE WOUNDED AND SICK DURING THE RUSSIAN-TURKISH WAR IN 1877-1878

Abstract

The wars waged by the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. (Russian-French (1812–1813), Crimean (1853–1856) led to increased charity work among various segments of the population (intellectuals, nobles, townspeople) in favor of the army and the military, which was expressed in the participation of the sisters of mercy and women in the care of the sick and wounded in the battlefields, in the rear hospitals, in the gathering of the means necessary for dressing and treatment, and other things, and the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, during which the city of Yelysavetgrad was an exception a committee of the Society was created ting the wounded and sick warriors.

The article discusses the participation of the members of the Yelysavetgrad Committee from March 1877 to July 1878, the steps of individual citizens of the city, as well as the decisions of the local self-government bodies aimed at various charitable activities: training the Sisters of Charity; providing assistance to sick and wounded warriors with money, food and other things; visiting warriors in hospitals and infirmary; raising money and material for the needs of the army; repair of houses and barracks for wounded warriors; renting apartments for poor families of soldiers; facilitating the adoption and temporary placement with their subsequent destination of mobile sanitary units from the Red Cross, who came from different provinces of Russia; meeting trains with the wounded and sick at Yelysavetgrad Station and providing them with various humanitarian assistance; guardianship of sick Turkish captives; conducting various charity events and events (performances, concerts, festivities, lotteries, fundraising in churches, in the city, county) and more. Emphasis is placed on the active participation of the city’s public in providing assistance to the wounded and sick warriors, which has become an important school of community cohesion, awareness of the city’s residents of tolerance, humanism, mutual assistance in wartime.
