ACTIVITIES OF THE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN TECHNICAL SOCIETY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN THE BLACK SEA REGION IN THE MIDDLE OF 1890s

Abstract

The article examines the activities of the Imperial Russian technical society and its Nikolaev branch in the mid-1890s on the development of special technical education and the establishment of a technical school in Mykolayiv, Kherson province. It was found that the IRTS had a Standing Committee on Technical Education, which laid the foundations for an organized study of the problem of vocational training of factory workers. IRTS established secondary schools for the children of workers, as well as general Sunday-evening classes for educational and technical training of workers and artisans.

A significant role in the formation of the state, both industrial and agricultural in future, was assigned to the industrial development of the Black Sea-Azov region in general, and the Ukrainian cities Kherson and Mykolayiv in particular. Their prospects to turn from an agrarian region into an industrial-agrarian one began to emerge clearly in the last quarter of the 19th century. The Mykolayiv branch of IRTS undertook a creation of technical educational institution in the city. The results of the study on the level of development of industry and agriculture in Kherson province required the creation of a technical educational institution. The thorough approach of the Commission to the question of opening an average mechanical and technical school in Mykolayiv consisted also in studying the conditions for practical training of future experts, possibilities of their employment and material maintenance. The work, done by the commission, and the prepared materials eloquently testified that Mykolayiv had such conditions and opportunities. It was found out that the Mykolayiv branch of IRTS had developed plans for theoretical and practical training of specialists in the field of mechanical and technical knowledge, shipbuilding and agricultural engineering. The school curriculum was prepared in order to develop special theoretical knowledge and practical skills for 4 years.
