Spiritual-moral and national aspects in the pedagogics of Yosyf Slipyi

Abstract

The article is devoted to the figure of the Metropolitan of the Greek-Catholic Church of Ukraine Yosyf Slipyi. In history, this person is known as a religious figure, a scientist-theologian and a teacher. Christian pedagogy considers the process of upbringing through the prism of spiritual values and moral norms which was followed in life by a man who has become a ideal exemplified. Comparison with him points out what behavior of the believers is ethical and which is not. Such exemplified is the figure of Metropolitan Yosyf (Slipyi). The life of Y. Slipyi was associated with Christian pedagogy, he was adherent of firm discipline. His pedagogical model was based on Christian morals, decent living conditions and Western European values (humanism, recognition of individual and spiritual principles in personality). This included inculcating a sense of beauty, involved adherents an museum affairs, the organization of libraries.

He believed that the greatest disaster for the church and society was the lack of unity and until the last years of life he worked for the sake of national and church unity of Ukrainians.

Yosyf Slipyi commented on political events: he condemned the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, he regarded the period of Soviet power in Ukraine as occupation, suffering from the fact that he could not stop the murder during the Second World War. He felt the limits of the possibilities of the spiritual sphere and understood that the church could not prevent further catastrophe. Yosyf Slipyi spent 18 years in prisons and exile. After his release in 1963, his activities were concentrated in two directions: firstly, he took part in the processes concerning the renewal of church life; and secondly, made great efforts on presenting the truth about the oppression of believers in the USSR. The Metropolitan criticizing «the diplomatic silence of the Vatican».
