Abstract

The Black Sea Cossack army was created on the eve of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1791 with the purpose of involving former Cossacks in mobile units that would not only protect the southern frontiers of the Russian Empire (modern territory of southern Ukraine) from hostile penetrations, but would also contribute to liberation and annexation to the empire of new territories. From the first days of the war, the Black Sea Islands participated in the liberation of the Ochakiv region from the oppression of the Ottoman Ports. On their way there were numerous Turkish fortresses, among which Ochakivs’ka struck his own indignation.

In this article, on the basis of the factual material highlighted in the writings of historians of the nineteenth century. (A. Skalkovsky, S. Ushakov, P. Korolenko, E. Felitsyn, I. Dmitrenko) and the twentieth century. (V. Golobutsky, I. Sapozhnikov, T. Goncharuk, O. Bachinskaya, R. Shiyan, A. Lozheshnik), as well as archival material of the State Archives of Krasnodar Territory, the participation of Cossacks of the Black Sea troops in the Ochakiv campaign was disclosed.

For the Black Sea Oceans, the campaign began in May 1788, when the commander-in-chief of O. Suvorov and the commander of the naval fleet of the Russian Empire invited their Cossack flotilla to strengthen the coast near Kinburn. That check on the combat readiness of the troops began events 7 and 17–18 June 1788, when the Cossacks met with the Turkish flotilla of Hasan Pasha, causing it considerable losses. The Chernomorsky dignity overcame obstacles in the above-mentioned campaign, including the Hadzhibey Bastion and the Berezan Fortress. But the outcome of the campaign was the assault on the Ochakiv fortress, in the forefront of which again were the Black Sea.
