Abstract

On the basis of published sources and works of predominantly German authors, this article examines circumstances, causes and the process of SPD and KPD union into the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in the Soviet occupation zone from the moment when the idea of unity first appeared to the Unity Congress in April 1946. The articles also describes a response of both leading social democrats of Eastern and Western occupation zones and representatives of occupying powers towards the purpose and methods of this unity.
