Abstract

This article analyzes the basic principles of formation and development of electric traction on the railways of Ukraine. Revealed the origins of the ideology of the introduction of electric traction in rail transport. The author analyzes the contribution of outstanding scientists and engineers, railwaymen in this issue. It is shown that electric traction allows for high-power locomotives, which can be achieved by connecting a number of locomotives in one manageable system of many units with one driver on front electric train. This feature allows to move to higher speeds and larger scales of rolling stock. It is alleged that the introduction of electric traction so increases throughput and carrying capacity, that some railroads no need to build the second track.
